Belleek Pottery history

Belleek Pottery is a porcelain company that began trading in 1884 as the Belleek Pottery Works Company Ltd in Belleek, County Fermanagh, Ireland. However, the history of pottery in the region goes back further, to around 1849, when John Caldwell Bloomfield inherited his father's estate. Bloomfield, an amateur mineralogist, ordered a geological survey of his land, which revealed that the area was rich in minerals.

In 1853, Bloomfield commissioned a mineral survey of his lands, which found that there were sufficient deposits of feldspar and kaolin (china clay) in an area about eight miles from Belleek at Larkhill to make mining commercially viable. He then went into partnership with London architect Robert Williams Armstrong and Dublin merchant David McBirney. In 1857, construction began on the Belleek Pottery building, with Mrs Bloomfield laying the foundation stone. The factory was designed to accommodate as many as 500 workers and was completed in 1860.

Initially, the company produced domestic stoneware, including tiles, pestles, mortars, washstands, and tableware. However, the partners had their sights set on creating decorative porcelain pieces. In particular, they wanted to produce Parian ware, a form of bisque porcelain that resembles white Parian marble. The first few attempts at parian ware failed, but by 1863, a few small pieces were successfully produced. By 1865, the company had begun to export its porcelain to England, the United States, Canada, and Australia, and even Queen Victoria and the Prince of Wales were customers.

By 1884, all three original partners had died, and a group of local investors purchased the company, renaming it Belleek Pottery Works Company Ltd. In 1893, master craftsman Frederick Slater moved from England to Belleek and headed the company's design department for the next 40 years. The company struggled during the First and Second World Wars, concentrating on producing earthenware during these periods.

After the Second World War, Belleek Pottery stopped production of earthenware and began using electric-powered kilns from 1952. The company has changed ownership several times since then, and today, it operates as a group of decorative art and gift brands, including Galway Irish Crystal, Aynsley China, and Donegal China. Belleek Pottery remains the oldest craft pottery in Ireland, producing more than 100,000 pieces of pottery annually.
