SMS format for linking Aadhaar and PAN

Linking your Aadhaar with your PAN is a mandatory process. This is because it allows your income tax returns to be processed, and it is also required for banking transactions of Rs.50,000 and above. If you do not link your PAN with your Aadhaar, it will become inoperative.

There are three ways to link your PAN with your Aadhaar: through SMS, through the e-filing portal, and while e-filing your income tax return. Here is the SMS format for linking your Aadhaar and PAN:

> UIDPAN [Your 12-digit Aadhaar number] [Your 10-digit PAN number]

For example, if your 12-digit Aadhaar number is 111122223333 and your 10-digit PAN number is AAAPA0000Q, the SMS would be:

> UIDPAN 111122223333 AAAPA0000Q

You can send this SMS to either 567678 or 56161. Please note that SMS charges levied by your mobile operator will apply. Ensure that your valid mobile number is registered in the Aadhaar database as you will receive an OTP to complete the procedure.

You can also link your Aadhaar and PAN through the e-filing portal. Here are the steps:

  • Visit the e-Filing Portal homepage and click on 'Link Aadhaar' under the Quick Links section. Alternatively, log in to the e-filing portal and click on 'Link Aadhaar' in the Profile section.
  • Enter your PAN and Aadhaar number.
  • Click on 'Continue to Pay Through e-Pay Tax'.
  • Enter your PAN, confirm your PAN, and enter any mobile number to receive the OTP.
  • Enter the 6-digit OTP received on your mobile number and click on Validate.
  • Your request for the link will be submitted successfully, and you can check the Aadhaar-PAN link status.

For new applicants of the PAN card, the Aadhaar-PAN linking is done automatically during the application stage.

Consequences of not linking Aadhaar and PAN

According to the Income Tax Department, taxpayers must link their Permanent Account Number (PAN) with Aadhaar to avoid tax deduction at a higher rate. The deadline for this was May 31, 2024, and failure to do so will result in the following:

  • The PAN card becomes inoperative.
  • No refunds will be made against such PAN cards.
  • Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) and Tax Collected at Source (TCS) will be deducted/collected at a higher rate.
  • The PAN card will stop working, leading to difficulties in financial transactions.

The Income Tax Department may reject the Income Tax Return (ITR) when PAN and Aadhaar are not linked. Additionally, PAN and Aadhaar cards are required to access government services such as applying for a passport, obtaining subsidies, and opening a bank account.

If you fail to link your PAN and Aadhaar by the deadline, you will be required to pay a penalty of Rs. 1,000 when you raise a request to link the two.
