The history of the Mirro Aluminum Company

In 1909, the three companies merged, creating the Aluminum Goods Manufacturing Company, which was headquartered in Manitowoc, with Vits as president and Koenig as vice president. The company's first government contract came in 1911 when it won an $80,000 deal to build aluminium canteens for the army. By 1914, the company's employment was over 400 and its building space had grown to almost 90,000 sq ft.

In 1915, the company acquired the Standard Aluminum Company, another manufacturer in Two Rivers, and for the next two years, concentrated on the production of cooking utensils. The Mirro brand was introduced in 1917, quickly becoming one of the largest aluminium cookware producers in the country.

During World War II, the company retooled its factories to produce aluminium products for the military. When the war ended in 1945, the company expanded into aluminium toys, creating the popular Sno-Coaster saucer-shaped sled. In 1957, shareholders approved a name change to the Mirro Aluminum Company.

In 1958, Mirro began manufacturing a line of 16-foot aluminium boats under the Mirro-Craft name. In late 1971, Mirro purchased Cruisers, Inc., a manufacturer of fibreglass boats ranging from 16 to 25 feet in length. At its peak, Mirro was the world's largest manufacturer of aluminium cooking utensils, with as many as eight plants in three states and a diverse range of products, including pots, pans, small boats, and aluminium siding.

In 1982, the boat business was sold to employees, who moved it to a plant formerly owned by Mirro in Gillett, Wisconsin. The new company was named Northport, Inc., and the MirroCraft tradename was transferred to them. In 1983, Mirro was acquired by The Newell Companies, which also acquired Mirro's longtime neighbour, the Aluminum Specialty Company, the following year.

By 2001, facing competition from other manufacturers, Newell had moved most of its Manitowoc area operations overseas, and in 2003, it shuttered the most modern of the area Mirro plants, ending the company's 118-year history in the region.
