The plot of Pan's Labyrinth
'Pan's Labyrinth' is a dark fantasy film written, directed, and co-produced by Guillermo del Toro. The film is set in Spain in the summer of 1944, during the early Francoist period. The narrative intertwines the real world with a mythical world centred on an overgrown, abandoned labyrinth.
The protagonist, Ofelia, is a young girl who is fascinated with fairy tales. She is sent, along with her pregnant mother, Carmen, to live with her new stepfather, Captain Vidal, a ruthless captain of the Spanish army. Vidal is assigned to hunt down republican rebels, and his intrusion into Ofelia's life threatens her sense of security. She turns inward and embarks on an epic and increasingly fantastic journey of escape.
One night, Ofelia is led by a fairy, who appears to her as a large stick insect, to an old faun in the centre of the labyrinth. The faun tells her that she is a princess and the reincarnation of Princess Moanna, who must prove her royalty by completing three gruesome tasks. If she fails, she will never prove herself to be the true princess and will never see her real father, the king, again.
Ofelia completes the first two tasks: retrieving a key from the belly of a giant toad and retrieving a dagger from an underground lair where a child-eating monster sits. However, she becomes worried about her mother, whose condition is worsening. The faun gives her a mandrake root, which seems to ease Carmen's illness.
The third task involves spilling the blood of an innocent, and the faun suggests drawing a small amount of Ofelia's baby brother's blood. However, Ofelia refuses to harm her brother. Vidal finds her talking to the faun and shoots her. Ofelia's blood is spilled, which is enough to open the portal to the underworld, and she awakens unharmed in a golden room with her real parents. Meanwhile, Vidal is killed by the rebels.
