History of Villeroy & Boch

The history of Villeroy & Boch dates back to 1748 when François Boch, an iron founder in the village of Audun-le-Tiche in Lorraine, began manufacturing ceramic crockery with his three sons. The company was initially known as Boch and was based in a small pottery workshop.

In 1766, Boch was licensed by the Austrian Empress, Maria Theresa, to build a ceramics kilnworks nearby at Septfontaines, Luxembourg. Here, Boch improved the quality of the ceramics and introduced cost-cutting measures, including primitive mass production and more energy-efficient kilns. By the end of the 18th century, the Septfontaines factory employed around 300 workers. However, much of the factory was destroyed in 1794 by French Revolution troops.

In 1812, Jean-François Boch, the son of François Boch, began constructing kilns in the nearby town of Mettlach, Saarland, where he built a state-of-the-art factory in an abandoned abbey. This new facility incorporated a kiln that burned coal instead of wood and ventilated fumes to enhance the firing of clay and burn off excess fumes. Jean-François Boch also invented a pyrometer, which enabled craftsmen to regulate kiln temperature, and he founded a copperplate-engraving studio in Mettlach, allowing for mass production and mechanical printing of designs on ceramics.

Meanwhile, another earthenware factory was operating in Wallerfangen, just a few miles from Mettlach. This factory was owned and operated by Nicolas Villeroy since 1797. Villeroy attracted talented ceramics specialists to his company, including English experts, and he had also introduced coal-burning kilns and was experimenting with copperplate printing.

In 1836, faced with increasing competition from English porcelain manufacturers, Boch and Villeroy merged their businesses, creating Villeroy & Boch. This union was strengthened when Eugen Boch, Jean-François Boch's son, married Nicolas Villeroy's granddaughter, Octavie. The first joint project of the new firm was the Cristallerie, a crystal manufacturing facility in Wadgassen.

Under the leadership of Eugen Boch, Villeroy & Boch continued to innovate and expand. The company developed new products, such as terracotta ornamentation for buildings, and formed a new division to produce architectural ceramics.
