1966-1970 Chevelle oil pans
There are three distinct oil pans for the 1966-67 Chevelle:
Version 1 is specific to the 1966 model and was used on Chevelle 396 engines assembled up to December 30, 1965. It may have been used for longer. This oil pan has a front center hole for a bolt that attaches to the bottom of the timing cover, so the timing cover must be the correct version too. It has a simpler oil baffle design than the later versions, with a completely flat baffle and fewer indentations on the sides of the pan. Version 1 takes a curved dipstick tube.
Version 2 is likely a late 1966 or early 1967 oil pan. It has the same front center bolt hole as Version 1 but features a more complicated "X"-shaped baffle design and more indentations on the sides.
Version 3 is a 1967-only oil pan and does not have the front center bolt hole. It has an "X"-shaped baffle design, which changed to a "V" or "Y"-shaped pattern in later Chevelle oil pans.
All three versions of the 1966-67 Chevelle oil pans have two large indentations on the sides of the oil pan for inner tie rod end clearance. These indentations are necessary for the tie rods located at the front of the engine cross member. Impala and Camaro 396 oil pans do not have these indentations, as the tie rods for these vehicles are located at the rear of the engine cross member.
The 1965-66 Chevelle oil pans have a flat inner oil pan baffle with no stamped baffle grooves, while the 1967 pans have a stamped "X" groove. The 1968-70 pans have a "Y" groove. The 1965-66 pans also have a quarter-inch stamped indentation in the center of the oil pan, while the 1967-70 pans have a three-quarter-inch slot indentation.
