What You'll Learn

Using the Sends On Faders option
Logic Pro X has added a new Mixer Mode, which allows the channel strip fader and pan controls to be used to set the level and pan of the send return. When in the Mixer Window, you can switch on the Sends On Faders option found at the top of the mixer. From the drop-down menu, select the various sends that you’ve set up.
Any channel that has the selected send will be active with a gold-looking fader; all channels that don't have the selected send will be deselected, and you won't be able to adjust any fader levels. You can then simply raise or lower the level until the send is where you want it to be. This feature really comes into its own when you add the new Independent Pan control.
To do this from the Send drop-down menu found on the channel strip, select Independent Pan. When in Sends On Fader mode, you’ll see a Pan control appear for the channel strip you’re working on. This allows you to independently pan the sent signal to the left or right of your send buss, giving you independent panning control over the send. You could set up simple or even complex stereo sends from different sources and channels.
For example, you could pan left or right two or more tracks all running to the same buss, each with its own pan independent from the original track pan. In this example, you’ve set up two sends: a delay and reverb. The Delay has two tracks running into it: a subtly filtered topper along with a short percussive fill-in. The topper is panned to the right with the Sends On Fader panned left. The Fill-in is panned left on the track channel and right on the send.

Selecting Independent Pan
To select Independent Pan, go to the Send drop-down menu found on the channel strip and select Independent Pan. You'll then see a Pan control appear for the channel strip.
You can set up simple or complex stereo sends from different sources and channels. For example, you could pan left or right two or more tracks all running to the same buss, each with its own pan independent from the original track pan.
This feature enables you to set up a complex and full stereo imaging with just a few tracks and sends.

Panning the three toms
- Separate the Drum Tracks: Ensure that your drum tracks are separated into individual tracks for each drum sound. This allows you to independently manipulate the panning for the toms without affecting the other drum elements.
- Select the Tom Tracks: Identify the three tom tracks that you want to pan. You can do this by naming the tracks accordingly, such as "Low Tom," "Mid Tom," and "High Tom."
- Access the Mixer Window: Open the Mixer Window by clicking on the mixer button, usually located in the upper right corner of the main window. This window provides access to the panning controls for each track.
4 Understand Panning Options: Logic Pro X offers three panning options: "Stereo Pan," "Balance," and "Binaural Pan." "Stereo Pan" allows you to place the sound in the stereo field by panning it left, right, or anywhere in between. "Balance" is typically used for mono tracks, and "Binaural Pan" is for more complex panning setups.
Adjust Panning for Each Tom:
- Low Tom: For the low tom, you might want a more centred and grounded sound. Set the panning knob to a position slightly left or right of centre, depending on your preference.
- Mid Tom: The mid tom can be panned harder left or right to create a sense of separation from the low and high toms. Experiment with panning positions to find the right balance.
- High Tom: The high tom often benefits from being panned to the opposite side of the mid tom to create a wide stereo image. This adds depth and dimension to your drum mix.
Fine-Tune and Experiment: Panning is a creative process, so feel free to experiment with different panning positions for the toms until you find a configuration that complements the overall mix. You can also adjust the stereo width using the Stereo Spread knob to make the stereo image wider or narrower.
Additionally, if you're using Alchemy in Logic Pro X and want to adjust panning for specific presets, you can access the Advanced menu. Here, you can turn off pan modulation for a particular source by clicking the Advanced button, selecting the centre of the Pan knob in the desired source, and disabling the corresponding LFO modulation. This allows you to remove any automatic panning that might be occurring in the preset.

Using the Transform Pad
The Transform Pad is the section of eight pads on the left of the Performance Controls section. The Transform Pad offers up to eight different "snapshots" for each preset, which you can choose from and move gradually between in real-time. This allows you to quickly change the sound characteristic without changing it entirely.
The snapshots should be approximately the same volume, with a peak level of around -5 dB. Relative volume levels between snapshots should also be considered. For instance, if a soft pad and a distorted lead both peak at -5 dB, the lead may seem louder. In this case, the volume of the lead should be lowered, rather than increasing the pad level.
Snapshots can be replicated, renamed, and swapped. To replicate a snapshot, control-click anywhere on the Transform Pad and select "Store Current Snapshot" from the shortcut menu. To rename a snapshot, control-click anywhere on the Transform Pad and select "Rename Current" from the shortcut menu. To swap snapshots, control-click anywhere on the Transform Pad and select "Swap Current Snapshot" from the shortcut menu.
The Transform Pad also includes an Octave pop-up menu, which defines an octave range used to switch between Transform Pad positions when playing notes within the specified range. The Rate field sets the speed of movement between snapshots when switching from a MIDI keyboard. The ModWheel pop-up menu assigns your keyboard modulation wheel to a performance control, such as a knob or the x- or y-axis of pads.

Using the Tune/Pan and Phase tabs
Logic Pro X's Alchemy is a powerful and versatile digital synthesizer with a wide range of stock instruments and plug-ins. It offers a host of synthesis options, such as the ability to import sound quickly and easily.
The Tune/Pan and Phase tabs in Alchemy provide further opportunities to manipulate partials and create complex and interesting dynamics in your songs.
In the Tune/Pan tab, you can adjust the panning for each partial, allowing you to create complex stereo imaging. For example, you could pan the three toms across the soundstage, with the topper panned to the right and the fill-in panned left on the track channel and right on the send.
Additionally, you can retune partials by drawing to take them out of their natural harmonic series. This allows you to change the sound characteristic without completely altering it. You can also adjust the tuning of the partials by adding the Stretch effect in slot two, which creates different timbral effects.
In the Phase tab, you can create phase effects on the partials. For example, adding the Auto Pan effect in slot three and adjusting its parameters will produce a shimmering modulation effect that adds stereo width to the patch.
