Check application status

If you have applied for a PAN card through the UTIITSL or NSDL portal, you will receive periodic notifications via SMS and email from the Income Tax Department about the status of your new PAN card. These updates will inform you whether your PAN card is being printed, has been printed, or has been dispatched to your address. If you have not received any notification and a significant amount of time has passed, you can take further action to check the status of your application.

There are several ways to check the status of your PAN card application. One way is to use your acknowledgment number. When you submit your PAN application, an acknowledgment number is generated. After about four to five days, you can check your PAN card status online with this number. You can also use your PAN number to check the status of your application. Visit the Income Tax e-filing portal and click on 'Link Aadhaar Status' under the 'Quick Links' section. Enter your PAN number and Aadhaar number, then click 'View Link Aadhaar Status'.

You can also check the status of your PAN card application via SMS or by calling the NSDL customer care service. To check via SMS, open your SMS app and type your 15-digit acknowledgment number. Send this to 57575 and you will receive an SMS with the current status of your application. To check via phone, call the NSDL PAN customer care helpline at 020-27218080 and provide your 15-digit acknowledgment number to the customer service representative.

Additionally, the Income Tax department has an Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system that allows you to check the status of your PAN card application. Dial 08069708080 and follow the instructions given by the interactive voice.

If you need to reprint your PAN card, you can do so by applying online through the UTIITSL or Protean portals. This can be done when there are no changes to your PAN data.

To apply for a reprint of your PAN card through the Protean portal, follow these steps:

  • Visit the Protean website.
  • Under the 'PAN - New Facilities' heading on the left side menu, select the 'Reprint of PAN Card' option.
  • Enter your PAN number, Aadhaar number, date of birth and GSTN (if applicable).
  • Tick the declaration and enter the captcha code, then click 'Submit'.
  • You will be directed to the payment page. Once the payment is made, an acknowledgement will be generated.
  • You can check the status of your duplicate PAN card using the 15-digit acknowledgement number generated.

If you obtained your PAN using the 'Instant e-PAN' facility on the Income Tax e-filing portal, you can apply for a reprint through the UTIITSL portal. This facility can also be used if your PAN application was processed and dispatched through UTIITSL. The charges for reprinting your PAN card through UTIITSL are Rs 50 for dispatch within India and Rs 959 for dispatch outside India.

It takes around 15-20 days to receive your duplicate PAN card after submitting your application. If you have lost your PAN card due to theft, you must file an FIR at the nearest police station and submit the FIR copy along with your duplicate PAN card application.

Verify your PAN

Verifying your PAN card is a crucial process for all Indian citizens. The PAN card, provided by the Income Tax Department, works as a unique identifier for an individual and is necessary for transactions that involve payment of taxes. PAN card details must be verified regularly to check if they are valid, deactivated, or deleted.

There are three main ways to verify your PAN card online: file- and screen-based verification, screen-based verification, and software (API)-based verification. The first two methods are designed for governments or organizations that need to validate multiple PAN cards simultaneously. For file- and screen-based verification, you can validate up to 1,000 PAN cards at once, whereas the screen-based verification method allows for up to five PAN cards to be validated at once. To use either of these methods, you must log in to the e-governance website. The third method, software (API)-based verification, allows for PAN verification using a website's software application.

To verify your PAN card using the 10-digit alphanumeric PAN number, follow these general steps:

  • Visit the official website of Protean eGov Technologies Limited (formerly NSDL) or UTIITSL.
  • Enter your 10-digit PAN number.
  • Verify the CAPTCHA by entering the displayed code.
  • Submit your request for verification.

Additionally, you can verify your PAN card by linking it to your Aadhaar Card. Here are the steps for this process:

  • Navigate to the income tax e-filing website.
  • Input your PAN and Aadhaar number specifics within the 'LINK AADHAAR STATUS' segment.
  • Review the 'VIEW LINK AADHAAR STATUS' section for confirmation details regarding the linkage of your PAN Card and Aadhaar number.

It is important to note that the 'Verify Your PAN' feature on the e-Filing portal is a pre-login service for all users except external agencies, which require login access. Once the verification process is complete, your PAN card status will be displayed on the screen.

Linking your Aadhaar with your PAN is a mandatory process that will allow your income tax returns to be processed. For new applicants of PAN cards, the Aadhaar PAN linking is done automatically during the application stage. However, for existing PAN holders who were allotted PAN on or before 01-07-2017, it is necessary to link PAN with Aadhaar manually. If you do not link your PAN with Aadhaar by 30 June 2023, your PAN will become inoperative.

To link your Aadhaar with your PAN, you can follow the steps below:

  • Visit the e-Filing Portal Home page and click on Link Aadhaar in the Quick Links section. Alternatively, log in to the e-filing portal and click on Link Aadhaar in the Profile section.
  • Enter your PAN and Aadhaar Number.
  • Click Continue to Pay Through e-Pay Tax.
  • Enter your PAN, confirm PAN, and any mobile number to receive the OTP.
  • After validating your PAN and Aadhaar, you will see a pop-up message saying "Your payment details are verified". Click Continue on the pop-up message to submit the Aadhaar PAN linking request.
  • Enter the required details and click on the Link Aadhaar button.
  • A request for the Aadhaar-PAN link has been submitted successfully, and you can now check the Aadhaar-PAN link status.

Alternatively, you can link your Aadhaar with your PAN through Biometric mode at UTIITSL Branch Offices.
